Wineshark Go Hiking - 東涌緩跑去機場

Difficulty: 1/5

Total Distance: 3.64 km

From: 東涌站

To: 國泰港龍大厦

Date: 13 Apr 2020

Transportation:

  • Take MTR to Tung Chung Station
  • Take CityBus No. S1 at Cathay Dragon House back to Tung Chung Station

From Tung Chung Station Exit B go outside to the open area in front of Citygate. Walk along the Mei Tung Road to reach Tat Tung Road and cross the street to Ngong Ping Cable Car Station.

On the right is Tat Tung Road Garden. Passing through it, exit through the other side to Tung Chung Waterfront Road, and then use the flyover to cross the street. Then turn right and continue along the road to the bridge, or Chek Lap Kok South Road, to Chek Lap Kok.

On the bridge there is a good view at the channel between Chek Lap Kok and Tung Chung, and further along the other bridge, which is the main road connecting to the airport. At the same time, the cable cars are atop the head going to the Airport Island Angle Station.

The angle station is a special design for Ngong Ping 360, as the cab car basically has a 90 degree turn at the station, and the system allows that change in direction without having passengers to get off the cable car. From this point there is also a red-painted path on the road, the airport jogging path.

Following the path and turning right along Scenic Road, on the left there are the huge tanks storing aircraft fuel. Towards the end turning right and going up a small hill is Kwo Lo Wan Road, where Ancient Kiln Park is located.

Inside the park there is a kiln replica from the ones discovered during the construction of the airport. More than 20 kilns were found, dated back to the Tang Dynasty. There are also signposts explaining the history of Chek Lap Kok, really worth to pay a visit to understand more.

Continuing along the road, with the busy North Lantau Highway on the left, soon the road leads to a curve, where many palm trees are grown. On a sunny day it creates an atmosphere like being on an island in Bali.

Then one will walk beneath the North Bridge seen earlier from Chek Lap Kok South Road. On the base of the bridge there are a few people fishing, but with the tide the water level is almost reaching the base so it seems they would have to leave soon.

Now the sea is on the right side, and along the waterfront is a beautifully landscaped garden, with many newly planted trees. Further out is the new high-rises in North Tung Chung, witnessing the busy activities at the airport.

Soon there are a number of buildings come into sight. First is the new Hongkong Airlines Training Centre, which was just opened in September 2019. Next is CNAC House, the corporate building for Air China, before finally reaching the destination, Cathay Dragon House, headquarter of the local airline.

This trail is flat and all concrete road so very easy to walk. Afterwards one can also spend some time in Citygate to enjoy shopping in the many outlets and have a good meal before returning home.
