Wineshark HK Restaurant Review - Kung Wo Bean Curd Factory

Located in Sham Shui Po, in the traditional neighborhood of Pei Ho Street, this factory is a famous one specializing in bean curd and related products. Arriving after lunch hours, it was still full of people and we were asked to go to another side through a side-door in the back alley. Not a particularly pleasant way to be honest.

Seated on one side of the table, we ordered two bean curd, one assorted deep fried tofu mix, steamed rice rolls, curry fish ball and pigskin. The bean curd was really nice with good bean flavors, and while smooth, it was not watery.

The deep fried tofu mix was also fairly nice, and my favorite was the fish and soya cake. Crispy on the surface but soft inside with a bit of fish meat to complement.

As to the rice rolls, fish ball and pigskin, they were just very mediocre and not worth mentioning. But the price for those were very cheap indeed.

One could not expect anything on the service in such setting, and Kung Ho did just the bare minimum on that. The final bill was $52 for two person, which was very economical nowadays. However, considering the hygiene and overall satisfaction I would still rate this restaurant fairly low, but still would be an experience for someone to try some traditional bean curd  and snacks in the neighborhood.

My overall rating is 20/100.

Wineshark HK Restaurant Review - 22 Ships

This tapas bar is named according to the street number where it is located, and since no reservation is available we went there by 6pm sharp to avoid having to wait. But upon arrival there was already a small queue outside, so apparently this is a popular place.

Being a tapas bar the environment was more for casual drinks and snacks than a formal dining restaurant, and the tables and stools are thus meant for easy chat than comfort. We were seated at a small table near the door, and I started by ordering a fino sherry which was quite poor in quality.

We started by ordering some para picar, the first being a pan con tomate with crisp jamon. The toast is crispy with nice finely chopped tomato on top, with some fried jamon sprinkled to add further to the flavor. This tapas was nice and set us off for a good start.

Then we had the 48 month Iberico bellota. Quite a tiny portion and compared with all the 48 month bellota I had before, though the ham was fatty and tender, there was a lack of the strong savory taste that I would expect.

The third appetizer was jamon, manchego & truffle toastie, with quail eggs. The stuffing of the toast was nicely seasoned and the strong truffle notes complemented perfectly with the ham and cheese. Again a delicious tapas which should be the standards for such a renown eatery.

Next we sampled the different dishes that seems to be of interest, beginning from octopus with chili, garlic and coriander. A commonly available dish in Spain, the octopus had good texture and not over chewy, and the sauce brought freshness to our taste buds, which also paired quite well with the dry oloroso I had.

For the egg we tried the duck egg, with maitake mushroom and serrano. The egg was nicely pan-fried with the mushroom and ham on the side, quite decently made but might not give you any feeling of exceptional quality or flair.

One of the signature dishes of 22 Ships is Berkshire pork and foie gras burgers, with avocado and pickled cucumber. A really mini-burger, we ordered two sets so there were sufficient for the four of us. The meat was juicy and the foie gras adding the extra intensity on the flavor to make this dish the best on the night.

Finishing we had Hawke's Bay lamb shoulder with eggplant and mint, with the meat cooked to good tenderness and easily flaked. Adding the eggplant and mint together there was a nice sweetness and minty flavors in addition, making this also a fairly good dish in my opinion.

The service of 22 Ships was decent, as one would not expect too much from such a tapas bar, but the price was quite high for the food we had, with the bill being $1,434 for 4 persons. Not value for money in my opinion, and the food quality and overall atmosphere would not make me want to go there again.

My overall rating is 40/100.

Wineshark HK Restaurant Review - Ted's Lookout

Located in Moon Street, an interesting neighborhood at one end of Wanchai district, Ted's Lookout is a nice bar with good music and atmosphere for one to relax after work. No wonder when we arrived it was already crowded, especially the outdoor area where people could enjoy some fresh air.

Not meant for a sit-down restaurant, the table we got is very tiny and the sitting space would not be able to accommodate a person with a bigger belly. But since this is a bar I could not complain too much on that aspect. I ordered Catch Me Kate, a cocktail which tasted fresh and good for starting the dinner.

We had Taco Platter and Buffalo Wing Lollipops as starters. The platter is really good with four different tacos, including Mexican Chorizo, Beef Carnitas, Signature Fish and Grilled Tiger Prawns. The fish was not oily at all and delicious, though the tiger prawn was a bit overdone and dried. For the buffalo wings, they were prepared to resemble lollipops and served perfectly as a finger food, with the right spiciness, crispy skin and tender meat.

Then Ivy had a Hamburger and me the Louisiana Fried Catfish Bites. Even though I did not eat the hamburger, it looked so tasty that I thought of ordering a chicken burger also. The fish bites were fried perfectly and not oily at all, with the fish soft, the batter of appropriate thickness and crispiness, though it was a bit too salty for me.

The service overall was reasonably well, and the Czech beer they recommended was also a great choice to pair with the food we ordered. However, the price was a bit too high with the bill at $904 for two.

My overall rating is 45/100.

Wineshark HK Restaurant Review - Sister Wah

Located in Tin Hau, near the MTR station, this is one of the places I went quite often when growing up. But after stopped eating beef frankly I did not come that many nowadays. On the night it was very crowded, as always, and we were seated at the back.

I ordered a Seaweed with three items soup rice noodle while Ivy had a beef tendon and tripe noodle. My noodle was good with the soup a clear broth of nice flavors, pairing well with the seaweed. The fish ball and squid ball were bouncy and got a good portion of the meat to make it balanced and not overly 'flour' in taste. Though I would say overall it was a bit too salty for my liking.

Normally in such eatery one would not expect too much on services, but I think the people were all friendly and nice, so still giving me a good impression despite being cramped in the seat in the corner.

Finally on the price, with the two noodles and a soy milk the total bill was $94. If I have to eat to full then I would need to order maybe another noodle, so it is not cheap from that perspective.

My overall rating for the restaurant is 53/100.
