With many restaurants still closed because of CNY, we have come to Crowne Plaza Hong Kong in Causeway Bay, at their steakhouse Carver, for a casual dinner.
The space is brightly lit, with a neat and trendy décor. The serving stations in the middle indicate the restaurant will also serve buffet breakfast in the morning.
To start, we have Mediterranean Seafood Cake ($188) to share. The seafood cake is made with crab meat and scallop, so compared with the usual crab cake it has a bouncier texture. Paired with a tartar sauce on the side, it is delicious.
Continuing with soup, I have Lobster Bisque ($148) which is rich and creamy, intense in flavours, with a nice fragrant cognac note. The orange lobster oil drizzled on top helps to strengthen the essence of lobster further.
My wife has chosen French Onion Soup ($98), with Gruyere cheese toast on it, but she has asked to skip the cheese. The soup has a nice taste, with the caramelized onion showing good sweetness but not over-burning to result in bitterness.
On the main course I have picked US Prime Tenderloin 225g ($498). Grilled to medium rare per my request, the beef is tender and juicy, seasoned well and able to highlight its original and authentic flavours. It is served with a red wine sauce, some cherry tomatoes and grilled garlic on the side.
I also order an additional side dish of Sautéed Shimeji & Long Tail Mushroom ($65). A generous portion, the sauteed mushroom are good in taste, sufficiently ‘dry’ as some restaurants will make this too soggy which ruins the texture.
My wife has Patagonian Toothfish ($388) where the large fillet is oven-baked with brown butter. Unlike the commonly served cod, the toothfish has a firmer texture and less oily, a much better-quality fillet.
For dessert, my wife has picked Mille Feuille ($88). The puff pastry has some creamy red beans, with dried tangerine peel custard and red dates on top. On the side is vanilla ice cream with some crumbs.
And I finish with Carver Sundae ($88), choosing Strawberries Romano. On the strawberry ice cream there are layers of whipped cream, with some fresh strawberries on top and drizzled with strawberry sauce, bringing back some childhood memories.
Service is good, with the staff friendly and helpful. The
bill on the night is $1,629 which is reasonable. A nice steakhouse to go for
casual meals.
