Wineshark Japan Journey - Kira Saga 季楽本店

Checking out the hotel in Fukuoka, we began the journey in Saga. The first stop was Saga City, the capital of the prefecture. One of the specialties of Saga is definitely its beef, and so we went to 季楽本店, a specialty restaurant, to enjoy one of the best-known brands of beef in Japan.

We had tried to book a table the day before but without success, but the hotel staff advised us that walk-in was possible. Arriving around 11:30am, we only needed to wait for about 30min before getting our table, which was not too bad.

I ordered 佐賀牛ロースステーキランチ (5,400 yen) while my wife had 鍋島御膳 (4,200 yen). One major difference between our sets was that the wagyu beef of the latter came from other areas in Japan.

The staff quickly served us the 小鉢 and サラダ, as well as the sauce for dipping the beef.

My set included also the Saga beef sirloin, with beautiful fatty flakes and just seasoned with simple salt and pepper, to allow for tasting its most original and delicious taste.

There was also 野菜盛、ご飯、汁物、香の物 in the set.

My wife’s set has some thin slices of beef with also a leaner tenderloin, which was to her liking as she did not like the beef to be too fatty.

Grilling the beef and vegetables by ourselves to our preferred level, it was a satisfactory meal and we both enjoyed the quality of the beef.

Included in the set was デザート and 食後のお飲物, which completed a nice meal with a decent crème brulee and coffee.

With two beverages, the total amount for the day was 10,430 yen. With decent service, good quality Saga beef, and a reasonable dining ambience, it was really good value for money. No wonder the restaurant was very popular and had also now got outlets in Tokyo too.
