This is the start of MLH Trail and although a bit long at 10km, it is in fact easy, with concrete and flat road in the majority of the section. The distance post covers from M001 to M020.

After walking for about 1km there is a branch on the road. The left continues along Sai Wan Road and we need to take the right one instead.

Soon you will begin to see the reservoir, and with there are some tree shades so it is pleasant on the walk.

Continuing at about 2.5km there is the Yuen Ng Fan Viewing Point on the right. In the distance one can see Tai Tau Chau and Kau Sai Chau, and even on a clear day the HKUST further out.

Walking on the side of the reservoir now, you will see the Bellmouth Siphon Spillway, the device used to release water from the reservoir to the sea if it is overflowing.

Looking across the reservoir and the calmness of the water brought a sense of quiet and peacefulness, a best way to remove your stress. In the distance the flat area in the middle is the destination - East Dam.

Walking now on the West Dam, on the right you can see Nam Fung Wan, as well as Chong Hing Water Sports Centre.

Having completed about 5.5km, you will reach Leung Shuen Wan Viewing Point. The bay where you can see the fish rafts is Sha Kiu Tau.

Passing by the steps leading to Pak Lap Village, it is close to East Dam. Before that it is nice to enjoy the azure blue water from the reservoir.

At a distance you can also start to the amazing hexagonal columns, the famous geological formation from the volcanic activities found only in this part of Hong Kong.

Reaching East Dam, the big blue-colored anchor of High Island Reservoir Monument has engraved the people who had perished constructing this engineering wonder in memory of their sacrifice.

Walking on the dam looking out to the cofferdam brings me to a heartfelt gratitude for the people and the vision to build this reservoir to resolve the water shortage problem in Hong Kong.

After passing by the public toilet, it begins the uphill steps leading to Long Ke.

At the end of the steps there is a branch, with the right leading to Biu Tsim Kok Viewing Point. If you have not done so, it is worth going up and follow the trail around to look at the scenery.

Continuing along the well-paved path, you will see Long Ke and the beautiful beach there. In the distance there are many erosion caves visible.

Arriving at the end of Section 1, you can decide to continue along the trail to Section 2, or return on the same way back to East Dam to take taxi back to Sai Kung.
