Wineshark Go Hiking - Hong Kong Trail Section 1 – The Peak to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road 港島徑(第一段) 山頂至薄扶林水塘

Difficulty: 2/5

Time: 6.22 km

Starting Point: The Peak

End Point: Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road

Date: 18 Oct 2020

Transportation:
  • Take NWFB No. 15 from Exchange Square, Central heading for The Peak, alight at terminus
  • Walk along Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road to reach Pok Fu Lam Road, then take NWFB No. 4 going to Central

Starting at The Peak, head for Lugard Road beside the Peak Tower. There is a sign showing HK Trail indicating the start of this 50-km trail and this is the first section, and probably the easiest one. The first notable historic building is the Peak Tramways Limited.

This initial part of the trail is very simple, flat and concrete, with good views of the city underneath, so as expected it is very crowded especially during weekends and holidays. On the trail you will notice there are distance posts indicating your progress. With numbers, each post is separated by 500 m.

Along the trail you can look at Central and Sheung Wan, as well as the whole Kowloon. There is also some old Indian rubber trees with the aerial roots dangling, giving a very unique and beautiful scene.

Soon reaching the junction connecting with Harlech Road, turning the sharp turn to go down the road, and there is a public toilet. Continuing on the concrete path downhill this part of the trail reminds easy and effortless.

At the end of the path and going up a few steps lead to Lung Fu Shan Viewing Point. On one side you can see Lamma Island with the three high chimneys from the power plant, and on the other side looking at Mount Davis and further out Lantau Island and Ma Wan.

Then walking down the steps this began the downhill descend. The concrete steps are well-maintained and should not pose any challenge. At the end of the steps one have to turn left, with the sign showing the direction towards Pok Fu Lam Reservoir.

This begins the section on dirt path which is to me the more comfortable and easy walk. With trees on both sides shaded it is fairly well-covered even for a sunny day. Soon there is a branch in the trail, with one leading down on the right towards Pok Fu Lam Reservoir. But we have to continue straight towards Chi Fu.

In this section you will see more streams feeding into the reservoir below, with the water crystal clear and very tempting for one to reach out and feel the coolness. Again because this section is well-shaded, even in summer it will not be too hot.

Passing a few more streams the path soon joins back to the concrete road, and one will reach Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road. At the junction, turning left and go uphill we can return to the Peak. But we will turn right instead and downhill, continue on the road to the end of Section 1.

At the end of Section 1, there is a small waterfall on the left which is like congratulating you for the finish. The road continues towards Peel Rise is the start of Section 2, but that will be for another day.

Taking the leisure walk continuing along the road for another 1 km one will reach Pok Fu Lam Road, seeing the reservoir on the right, as well as the colonial building of the former watchman's cottage. Just before the end is the public riding school.

Overall this is a good trail for beginners who want to take a slightly longer hike but not having much up and downhills, with well-paved and maintained path.
