This restaurant is located in Repulse Bay, in the shopping mall The Pulse and facing the beach. Enjoying a fantastic view, during a cold winter night like today it might seem a bit quiet and desolate, but offering another ambiance of peacefulness and relaxation that I found cozy. The decor is simple yet showing some stylish elements, and we were seated at the booth at the end. While the music might be a bit loud, it still offers us good privacy and comfort.
We ordered two starters to share. The first one was Spicy Tiger Prawn Roll ($135). Beautifully rendered, the pieces of prawn meat is wrapped together with avocado in a rice paper, and then coated with some prawn sauce to highlight the flavors. The small pieces of chili not only adding a nice red colour to complement the presentation, it provided the spicy note making this a good appetizer. The arugula and deep dried shallot gave some crunchy texture to the dish. A really nice dish to begin our meal.
The other starter was Spicy Australian Big Eye Tuna Poke ($295). Again this dish was nicely prepared, with the ruby coloured tuna chunks on top of the avocado, with pickled red onion on top. The spicy notes actually come from the chipotle and the togarashi, the two types of chili found in Mexico and Japan. An interesting idea to use the chili from two different cultures to prepare, it had a lingering spicy note which was not apparent at first, but becoming apparent the more you ate. Another nice one.
For the main course originally we wanted to order two but the staff recommended us to go for one first as the porton is big. Taking her advice we had the Whole Roasted Free-Range Jerk Chicken ($295). Indeed the chicken is quite large and enough for two of us. The chicken itself was quite nicely done, marinated well with herbs so the meat had a delicate fragrance. It is also tender and now showing any oily heaviness. The taste was good even without dipping the mango habanero sauce. But the caramelized pineapple truly stole the limelight. Juicy and sweet, the surface was nicely caramelized to give some extra sweetness and smoky note to the already tasty fruit.
So instead we ordered two desserts. The first was the signature Hand Piped Churros ($105). Freshly deep-fried, they were served hot and crispy, while offering a good bite. The salty caramel dipping sauce was great too. And there was also a ball of coconut ice-cream on the side, with plenty of deep fried coconut shreds. Even though there were five sticks we finished all without feeling bloated.
The other dessert we had was Thai Milk Tea S'more ($75). Served in a flower pot with a piece of 'mocked' cactus, it was certainly creative and fun. The 'earth' was in fact Graham cracker, and underneath was the milk tea pudding, chocolate ganache and marshmallow. Honestly the taste was not too spectacular, but the presentation helped to capture our interest.
With a bottle of stilled water, the total bill on the night was $1067. A bit expensive considering the food quality and everything, what I like however was the overall feeling that I could enjoy the dinner here in a comfortable and peaceful environment, knowing that just outside is the beach in a good weather (although a bit cold) allowing us a nice stroll after the meal. And I found I could forget my works for a while to truly relax. That for me was worth much more.
