Wineshark Japan Journey - Oo-jinja 大魚神社の海中鳥居

Leaving Yutoku Inari Shrine we drove to Tara 太良町, which is famous for its daunting 6m tidal level differences, in order to visit the landmark Torii Gate in the Sea 海中鳥居. Despite having some rains, we were fortunate it was low tide when we arrived. There is a large torii gate at the parking lot, painted bright red in colour.

Passing the gate at the parking lot we walked down the oyster shell slope to the first of the three torii gates in sea. According to legend, 300 years ago the resident of Okinoshima 沖ノ島 left a drunken evil magistrate in what is now Tara to punish him. However, a large fish appeared and apparently rescued him. Since then, the evil magistrate repented and built a shrine and the torii gates.

Now this place is popular for people who come to pray for good catch and safety at sea. Proceeding along the stone path, we walked all the way to the furthest torii gate. In fact, we could continue to walk even further out, testimony to the huge tidal difference. However, in the high tide, all the three torii gates will be in water.

But with the wind continued picking up, and the rain also becoming quite heavy, we decided not to venture further out and return to the car, to drive to our hotel for the night.
