Wineshark Go Hiking - Lok Ma Chau to Ho Sheung Heung 邊陲塘北望神州

Difficulty: 1/5

Distance: 8.02 km

From: Lok Ma Chau Lookout

To: Ho Sheung Heung

Date: 4 Dec 2020

Transportation:
  • Take Green Minibus No. 75 departing from Yuen Long Fook Hong Street, alight at Ha Wan Fisherman San Tsuen, then walk up Lok Ma Chau Path to Lok Ma Chau Lookout
  • Take Green Minibus No. 51K departing from Ho Sheung Heung to Sheung Shui Train Station

Walking up the hill via Lok Ma Chau Path, very soon you will see the Lok Ma Chau Lookout on your left. This is a small garden with a viewing point, allowing a good look at the fishing ponds and Shenzhen further out.

Going back via Lok Ma Chau Path and turning right to continue along Lok Ma Chau Road, very soon you will reach the junction, and continue straight towards Ha Wan, taking the first right road, you will continue along the road, with fishing ponds on the left and Shenzhen further out.

It is very easy to walk as this trail is mostly flat and on concrete road. On the right is Lok Ma Chau Village and there are also some farms. Soon you will reach a farm called Lotus Farm, where on a prior visit we can go in and feed a huge pig the farm raised. Unfortunately today it was not open to visitors because of COVID.

Continuing the road, there are more fish ponds but some of them had already been abandoned, with the weeds growing to cover the whole area. Soon you will see the Lok Ma Chau Police Operational Base, and even though this part is no longer restricted, there are frequent sights of police vehicles on the road.

After this section there are more shades, but still one needs to have proper sun protection taking this trail. On the right in the distance you will see some farm houses and other cottages, and that is the now famous Ma Tso Lung village. But we will not go down that way, and continue straight on.

The road then goes slightly uphill and when we came here two years ago there was a nice field of silver grass. Originally planning to take some nice photos, but upon arriving we found the area had been burnt down, it was such a pity. Higher uphill there are still plenty of them but we did not take the risk.

Soon there is a road branching into Liu Pok village. Ignoring that and continue, on the left there is a small hill and at one point you can find a small trail going up. Taking that path you will be able to go to the top of this hill, offering a nice view of the surrounding areas, including Lowu border.

Then you will reach a branch, and taking the right path you will be on Fai King Road. Further on there is another branch, with the left leading to the border restricted area and so we take the right one. Here you will begin to see more houses and activities.

At one point there is the large pipe transferring water from Dongjiang to HK. Seeing that reminded us of the debate and controversy about the government paying the huge amount every year but in fact a sizeable portion of the water are in fact unnecessary and ended up into the ocean.

Do not want this to ruin my feeling, continuing on the road will reach Ho Sheung Heung Road. Taking the left fork will bring you to the river front, with a bridge crossing to the other side. Staying on the side and taking the right fork, you can continue along Sheung Yue River.

Taking a nice walk along the river, you can find the Sheung Shui Slaughter House on the left across the river. Very soon you will reach Ho Sheung Heung, and going into village on the left is the store of Gugusoy, where one can enjoy their nice bean curd dessert before finishing this trail.

Overall this trail is easy to walk, flat and all concrete road, but a bit long. Still very manageable for beginners, young and old people. And you will also see many bikers too.
