We then drive to Tonkatsu Ajima Honten こだわりとんかつ あぢま for lunch. The restaurant is very busy, even at the late lunch hour we have to wait for a while before getting our table.
The restaurant proudly offers rice grown by Hasegawa 長谷川 in Mito 水戸市, and a special type of pork called Saiki Pork 佐伯豚, a breed developed in Ibaraki prefecture.
I have Saiki Pork Loin Cutlet 230g Set Meal (2,780 yen). The thick-cut pork loin is very juicy and tender, with good meat flavours. The batter is thin and crispy, not feeling oily or heavy. With shredded cabbage, rice, pickles and miso soup it is really a big portion.
My wife has Shrimp Filet Cutlet Set Meal (2,180 yen), with two deep-fried large shrimps and two pieces of pork filet cutlets, offering a combination of the two delicacies. Whether you are a fan of tonkatsu or not, this restaurant is not one to miss in Hitachinaka.
Cost: 4,960 yen for two
