After alighting from the bus, one can first walk up the hill to the Lok Ma Chau Lookout. This place offers a great view on the border between HK and Shenzhen, and is an interesting sight seeing all the skyscrapers on the other side and the fish ponds and fields down below.
Returning to Lok Ma Chau Road and heading towards the border, soon you would reach Ha Wan Tsuen East Road and then turning to the right, this started the hike in this used to be restricted area, which was only opened to public in 2013.
Along the road there are many fish ponds and fields, with the rapid developments in Shenzhen on the background. The route is very quiet and occasionally there are cyclists but you would not see much people.
There is not much shade along the way so it is important to prepare and avoid sun-burnt. But the road is well-paved and flat, so very easy to walk. After passing by the road leading to Liu Pok Village one would soon reach Ng Tung River, and continue on along Fai King Road to Sheung Yue River.
Very quickly one would arrive at Ho Sheung Heung and before taking the green minibus 51K going to Sheung Shui Station, it would be good to enjoy the soymilk and bean curd custard at GuguSoy, a local manufacturer of the products.
